Note: within The Challenge we refer to generative AI chat systems as “chat AI”.

This document explains how ChatGPT is used in the learning experience “Digital2030 Challenge: Reducing Inequality” by Digital Moment. As an organization committed to fostering ethical and critical thinking in the use, application, and adoption of emerging technologies such as ChatGPT, Digital Moment recognizes the importance of addressing and demystifying these technologies. Our goal is to ensure that the younger generation is well-informed and adequately equipped to make informed decisions.

As with all generative AI, we believe that students should be equipped and encouraged to explore these tools with both curiosity and healthy skepticism, so that they can learn first hand how to scope the benefits and risks.

In the use of ChatGPT in the Digital2030 Challenge, this is not an endorsement of ChatGPT over other generative AI systems. We acknowledge ChatGPT, however, as an increasingly popular, as well as controversial technology in the education landscape. We believe it is critical to assess and understand these technologies before using and potentially relying on them.

The Digital2030 Challenge provides the opportunity for youth to reflect on pre-generated responses. Hence, users do not directly interact with the ChatGPT system. Instead, they receive a stored snapshot of what ChatGPT would have responded to at the time the questions were generated. Again, Digital Moment is not promoting the use of this technology, but rather the reflection and critical thinking that is necessary to approach this technology responsibly.By adopting this method, we maintain explicit control over the user experience and uphold a level of quality assurance and control unattainable with a live system. This control mitigates potential issues such as performance lags, system availability, conversation limits, changing models, algorithms, and associated costs, among others.

While ChatGPT’s language proficiency and extensive training give us access to a wide range of information and allow us to demonstrate the potential of chat AI to facilitate learning, generate discussion, and expand knowledge, it is important to assess its risks, including but not limited to bias in training data, generation of misleading or inaccurate information, and reinforcement of existing biases.

Therefore, by citing ChatGPT’s responses, we aim to illustrate the risks and provide examples specifically to explore and discuss the ethical and critical questions that need to be considered and to stimulate critical thinking among our audience.

ChatGPT is a proprietary tool from OpenAI made available to the public under their terms and conditions. Digital Moment has no commercial affiliation with OpenAI, does not profit in any way from its use, and does not exert any influence on the company to facilitate registration or to get technical support. Due to its immense popularity, ChatGPT accounts may be restricted or blocked for use by the company at their discretion. Digital Moment provides this material for educational purposes only and does not bear any responsibility or liability whatsoever in connection to the use or misuse of the tool.

This document provides an overview of how ChatGPT is used in the learning experience “The Digital2030 Challenge: Reducing Inequality”. It emphasizes the purpose, use, educational implications, risks, advantages, and ethical considerations associated with employing ChatGPT. It is crucial to clarify that in this learning experience, participants do not interact directly with ChatGPT, as it involves solely snapshots of our queries rather than live engagements. The goal is to cite the model’s responses to illustrate points and serve educational purposes such as improving critical thinking skills. Digital Moment aims to foster a culture of informed decision-making and responsible use of this transformative technology.
