A built environment is any area where humans have created the surroundings. Instead of leaving nature to its own devices (like in a natural environment), it features human built structures like roads, bridges, and skyscrapers that form the spaces where we live, work, and play.

The UN predicts that by 2050, nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. This rapid expansion of the built environment often slices through forests and fields, leading to Habitat Fragmentation that threatens wildlife.

Urban

Urban environments are busy areas, built by humans.

What It Looks Like

Tall buildings, paved streets, very little open soil, and lots of noise and artificial light.

For Wildlife

The most challenging environment for wildlife. Urban areas have fewer natural food sources, are warmer, and have very little places to hide.
