A built environment is any area where humans have created the surroundings. Instead of leaving nature to its own devices (like in a natural environment), it features human built structures like roads, bridges, and skyscrapers that form the spaces where we live, work, and play.

The UN predicts that by 2050, nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas. This rapid expansion of the built environment often slices through forests and fields, leading to Habitat Fragmentation that threatens wildlife.
