Now that you’ve learned about regenerative farming, it’s time to put it into practice! Use this farming simulator to see how well you can balance crop growth and regenerative farming methods.
How to Play:
- Familiarize yourself with the variables on the top and bottom of the screen. Looking at the farm, which methods might make those variables fall or rise?
- Click the green flag to begin.
- Click the different icons to change your farm
- Click the Compost Bin to improve Soil Health and boost Crop Growth.
- Click the Sprinkler to water the crops — this increases Water Level but also increases Water Use.
- Click the Pesticide Bottle to increase Crop Growth, but be careful, it can decrease Pollinator Count.
- The Pollinator Habitat can increase crop growth.
- Keep an eye on the water level and soil health
- If Water Level gets too low, Soil Health and Crop Growth decrease automatically.
- If Soil Health is high, Crop Growth increases over time.
- Rain will come intermittently. This will increase crop growth and water levels, but don’t rely on it too much; the weather can be unpredictable!
- You will have a minute and a half to increase your farm’s regeneration score and its crop growth! If you want to restart, click the red stop sign next to the green flag to stop the game.
- Look inside the game’s code to see the exact scores necessary to win the game
LET’S REFLECT…
After you’ve run the simulation and reviewed your final scores, take a moment to consider your results.
- Which farming choices helped your regeneration score the most, and why do you think those methods improved the health of your farm?
- Which trade-offs did you notice while playing (for example, actions that helped crop growth but harmed the environment)? How did you decide what to prioritize?
